On Thursday, May 23, I participated in an America Is All In Roundtable at the Duwamish River Community joined by dozens of government, non-profit, business and community leaders to discuss our collective work to transform our society towards clean energy.
Gina McCarthy, the first White House National Climate Advisor and previous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, led the roundtable discussion of how Washingtonians are a part of the solutions-driven efforts throughout our state.
Afterward, I participated in a press conference alongside Governor Inslee at Terminal 5, the Port's recently modernized terminal, boasting shore power capability at two berths, a state-of-the-art storm water system, and hybrid cargo handling equipment. This $500 million investment was only possible with grants from the federal and state government.
Since 2018, the state has invested nearly $160 million in initiatives supporting the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy — nearly all of which are from the Climate Commitment Act (CCA). Our industry-scale work in decarbonization would not be possible if not for the CCA, and continued investments into the blue economy will require ongoing funding generated by the Climate Commitment Act.
This clean energy transition is good for the earth, and helps us compete in global trade. It's the right thing to do for people, our planet and our economy. I’m proud that the Port of Seattle and Northwest Seaport Alliance are ALL IN on the fight to transform our industries.
